If like me you never “properly” shut your laptop down and just leave your browser open with every single tab JUST IN CASE you need it again…. then read on.
From the moment that my Firefox browser gave me tabs to use within a single window, I have always had dozens open at a time. Perhaps a symbol of a cluttered mind, or a creative one… I don’t know. But it is as it is and I have always wanted to get myself organised, in life, in finances and most importantly…. in my tabs.
So thanks to having a “transition breakfast” before the usual school run time resulted in a rare morning free I have just competed what I thought was impossible, I have brought forth order and peace to my Mac’s browser for the first time in many many MANY years.
First I started from the right most tab (by the way, 10 or so tabs didn’t even fit on the screen so as I deleted another would appear) I looked in my bookmark bar and decided that it didn’t fit anywhere…. oh crumbs.
OK then, bookmarks then I guess and since I had over 20 bookmark folders many containing other folders this needed a well deserved trim…
Since I have been making order out of chaos in other areas of my life I knew I needed as few categories to file things under as possible, so I made six new bookmark folders,
- Health – Anything to do with bettering my health both physically and mentally.
- Finance – Financial improvement of any kind, including FIRE (but more on that later).
- Food – I adore cooking and tasting great food, it all lives in here.
- Knowledge – I am a life long learner this is about pushing and expanding my mind.
- Family – All things that daily family life requires plus fun ideas for the future.
- Career – I certainly have had a squiggly career, so I put plans and ideas in this one.
Then began moving all bookmarks into each, where I had multiple in the same “subject” this became a subfolder…. when I saw something that did not fit one of these six main areas of my life I was pretty sure it was just a very old bookmark that did not fit my life goals right now so it got deleted.
Immediately I started to feel some weight lifting off my shoulders, something I guess I have accumulated over the 20+ years of a Mac (plus various other laptops)
So now here I sit, sitting here feeling rather smug with myself for being able to tame the badlands of my browser, it fells very satisfying. Yes of course six bookmark folders became eight, the extras to become homes for “Experiences” we want to do individually or as a family and finally “Ideas” for things I am dabbling with or want to mull over at a later date but I WILL delete if they sit there for too long.
Here we have it, an hours worth of digital tidy up time, bringing me a tiny bit closer to serenity on a wet Wednesday morning.
